No oil is used, so it's typically performed in comfortable clothing, either on a mat on the floor or on a massage table.
During the treatment, the therapist follows your body's energy lines, applying graduated pressure for a few seconds at a time using the thumbs, palms and occasionally the elbows, complemented by gentle joint stretches and mobilisation. The movements are smooth and rhythmic, paced to match the body's natural posture and breathing rhythm — the defining feature that sets Shiatsu apart from oil-based massage techniques.
